Faux Wall Finishes

Faux finishes can really add sophistication to any room.  Faux finishes can be added to furniture, walls, fixtures, or just about anything that you would like to dramtically change the appearance of.  There are many different types of faux finishes,  rag rolling, sponging, paper bagging etc.

You can add one color or as many colors as you would like. To achieve this affect, I started with the base color cream and added a burnt umber glaze with a cheese cloth.  The wall was already textured so it added even more depth to the final affect.  The whole process only took 1 afternoon and was relatively inexpensive.

You can also add architectural elements by adding plaster stencil as seen in the pictures below.

Faux Ceiling Finish

To get this affect on this ceiling, I started with a white base coat and plastic bagged raw umber glaze over the entire area.  Then where the ceiling drops down, I used the color burnt sienna to get a two-tone design.  Then to bring it all together, I plastic bagged a white pearl shimmer over the whole thing and added plaster stencils to the corners for added sophistication.  The shimmer makes it change colors in different lighting.  In some pictures it appears darker and others it appears lighter because I had the shades open for some and others I used a flash, just to show you the difference in colors with different lighting.

Any color glaze can be used to match any decor.  This bedroom had a lot of browns and reds in the accessories of the room, so by adding a hint of the redish brown, it really matched the room perfectly.  This ceiling took approximately 13 hours, because of using several different colors.  The cost was fairly inexpensive even though I used several different colors.  Total cost for glaze was $38.00.  So not bad considering what a difference it makes to the room.

More Faux Designs

This affect was attained by using two different glazes.  First I started with a cream colored basecoat.  Then I plastic bagged burnt sienna and after it dried I added raw umber and this created a gorgeous look.  The picture on the right is the more accurate color.  The living room light was on when I took the picture on the left and it makes it look more orange than it truly is.  The pictures do not do this one justice. See the difference you can make in your home with a little color? Don't be affraid to add a little color. The nice thing about using these glazes, is that if you're color doesn't turn out exactly how you want, you can always add another color to tone it down etc. Notice the cream color of the wall by the stairs, how bland it is, and then look at how the color and design makes the other wall stand out. You don't have to do every wall in a room, just do one as a focal point like I did here. Fairly inexpensive, but will add value and a hint of elegance to your home.

Keep checking back as I will be adding more pictures soon.  Thanks for stopping by!
